In an enlightening session at Teikyo University's Hachioji Campus, Mr. Takao Kaihara, distinguished for his roles at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), offered a unique perspective on international cooperation. Known for his extensive work in challenging regions like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Cambodia, Kaihara's contributions have spanned agriculture, infrastructure, and women's rights advocacy. Under the tutelage of Professor Atsushi Nishioka, students of the "International Cooperation I" course delved into the dynamic landscape of global collaboration. Kaihara, drawing inspiration from the legacy of the late Ms. Sadako Ogata, emphasized the integral role of international cooperation in Japanese culture. His discourse explored Japan's project framework, international outreach, and the pivotal significance of Official Development Assistance (ODA).
Highlighting the urgency of the ongoing situation in Ukraine, Kaihara underscored the adage, "compassion is not good for others," asserting that proactive involvement in peacebuilding initiatives and aiding developing nations contributes profoundly to Japan's own growth.
Drawing on his first-hand experiences in Afghanistan, Kaihara painted a vivid picture of everyday life, dispelling stereotypes and emphasizing our shared humanity. His interactions with diverse individuals, from all walks of life, illuminated unexpected sources of support during JICA's missions.
Closing the lecture with a rallying call, Mr. Ogata urged the young minds in attendance, expressing his fervent hope for a generation of Japanese leaders characterized by audacity and unwavering commitment to progress.
