Double care seminar and networking event for medical professionals heldItabashi Campus

On Saturday, March 9, 2024, Teikyo University Itabashi Campus held a Double Care Lecture and Networking Event for medical professionals, at which our faculty and Graduate School students participated as speakers.
This event was co-sponsored by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW), which has selected Teikyo University for its "FY2023 Project to Support Medical Professionals in the Child-rearing Generation." The lecture and social event were held under the theme of "double care," which describes the condition of simultaneously raising children and providing nursing care.
The event began with opening remarks by Yumiko Okubo, Director of the Center for Women Doctors and Researchers Support School of Medicine and Chief of the Department of Medical Education Professor and Medical Education Head of Center, followed by a lecture by Yukiko Terada Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Nursing Senior Assistant Professor of the University. Terada Senior Assistant Professor is also the representative of DC NETWORK, Japan's first support group for double carers with childcare and nursing care by medical professionals. In her mini lecture, she introduced the definition of double care and the social background of double care. This was followed by a lecture by Yuki Beniya (Graduate School of Public Health, sophomore) on balancing work with double care for childcare and nursing care, and an exchange session in which participants freely discussed double care. At the exchange meeting, the participants discussed in groups led by Teiko Namatame of Tohoku University Faculty of Medical Technology Department of Nursing Senior Assistant Professor, Chihiro Wakamatsu of the same department Assistant Professor, and Yuriko Mashida of part-time Graduate School of Public Health Senior Assistant Professor.
The 25 participants, including facilitators, included doctors and nurses from the university's School of Medicine affiliated hospitals, faculty and students from School of Medicine, Faculty of Pharma-Science and Faculty of Medical Technology, and Graduate School students from Graduate School of Public Health. The doctors and nurses talked about their own experiences with double care, including "I have met family members who were also double carers" and "It made me rethink my involvement as a medical professional. The participants talked about a wide range of topics with the keyword "double care". For the participating students, it was an opportunity to talk openly with faculty and staff outside of the classroom, and to learn not only about care for their patients, but also to consider their own career plans. The university will continue its efforts to raise awareness and educate the public about double care both on and off campus.
